Tis’ the season to be……anxious?
For a season painted out to be all things bright and sparkly, the holidays can hold a darker side. They often trigger a mix of complex emotions. While contributing factors vary, a common thread is: expectations.
And there’s no time like the holidays for expectations to be at their maximum potency. Expectations can range from very real (expressed) to imagined (assumed) and can trigger uncomfortable emotional responses.
How can we shift from being tied up in knots to rediscovering the joy of the holiday season?
Well, that’s where Expressive Arts Therapy has the potential to shine a light… Besides expanding our range of play and creativity, the Expressive Arts help develop problem-solving skills, increase our ability to handle uncertainty, and deepen our relationships with others. Expressive Arts Therapy can also enhance our capacity for self-reflection, awareness and the feeling of being safe and comfortable inside our own skin. When we’re more in touch and comfortable with our Authentic Selves and less reliant on the part of us we use to interface with the outside world, we become less attached to expectations and outcomes and more genuinely connected to ourselves and others.
